181st Avenue Safety Project
Gresham’s most dangerous roads are major streets with high speeds and high volumes of traffic.
Among them, 181st Avenue is a high-injury corridor with more fatal crashes than other Gresham streets.
Safety improvements are coming
We're improving safety along a stretch of 181st between Burnside and Stark streets that is closest to the E. 181st Ave. MAX Station. We want this stretch of 181st, near the heart of Rockwood, to feel safer and be safer for people on foot, transit users, and customers visiting businesses.
Project Schedule:
2025 - Preliminary Design
2026 - Final Design and Bid Documents
2027 - Construction
We Heard You!
We asked the community what would make it feel safer for people to walk, bike, use a wheelchair, and drive. Using those comments we created the design below.
Feedback Summary:
More crossings are needed along 181st and 182nd.
More lighting is needed to safely walk to the MAX station.
Safety for bicyclists is better with buffered lanes, but concerns that this reduces travel lanes.
Concern that traffic separators are confusing and hinder emergency response vehicles and business access.
Maintenance (potholes, bike lane sweeping) is a bigger issue than safety.
Concern that a new signal at Pine & 181st will stop traffic flow.
Need more enforcement for jaywalking issues and vehicles not following laws.
This project is federally funded with support from Congressman Earl Blumenauer.
